Recycling helps the environment in a number of ways. From reducing carbon emissions to keep landfills from overflowing, the more recycling consumers and business owners alike can accomplish, the better off our planet is. Some ways that recycling helps the environment, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, include:
1. Reducing Landfill Waste
Landfills are an environmental problem of their own and the more waste that ends up in them, the bigger the problem becomes. In a recent study, the EPA found that 21% of a landfill is food which can be composted, 14% is paper, 10% is rubber, and 18% is plastic which can all be recycled. By recycling and reducing landfill waste, landfills do not emit as many harmful gases and the need to create new landfills is not as pertinent.
2. Saving Forest Habitats
In order to produce paper products, forests are cut down to produce paper pulp. A study from the University of Southern Indiana found that “if every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save about 25,000,000 trees per year.” Trees produce oxygen which helps to cut down on carbon emissions within the environment. Trees also provide stability for a wide variety of ecosystems that support the life of a multitude of flora and fauna. By increasing recycling efforts around paper products, deforestation is not as necessary.
3. Decreasing Pollution
There are two ways that recycling can help reduce pollution. First, recycling helps to eliminate the necessity to manufacture new materials. This saves on creating emissions, dust, metals, and other contaminants that are products of the manufacturing process. Second, recycling helps to avoid the need to incinerate waste which has been proven to not be a solution to recycling. Incineration produces pollutants in the air and water around the incineration site. Human health is also affected by incineration which, in turn, creates more waste related to medical treatments.
These are only three ways that recycling helps the environment and there are plenty of other positive effects recycling has.
